“Gamera 2: Attack of Legion”

This project has been selected by the Japan Tourism Agency as one of the "Tourism Content Creation Support Programs* to Attract Inbound Visitors to Local Regions and Increase Consumption," and will be implemented by HIGASHI NIPPON BROADCASTING in cooperation with CB Corporation and ADK Marketing Solutions, Inc. with support from Sendai City and the Sendai-Miyagi Film Commission.

The tokusatsu movie "Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion," which was screened in 1996 and created a nationwide sensation, featured Sendai City prominently as one of the filming locations, and the local community was very excited. Meanwhile, the unique Japanese filming technique of "tokusatsu" is known overseas as "TOKUSATSU," and its popularity is increasing year by year.

With the aim of attracting as many foreign tourists as possible to Sendai and Miyagi in the current situation where the number of tourists from overseas has drastically decreased due to COVID-19, the "Gamera 2: Legion of Honor" exhibition will be held this time with the full cooperation of the Special Effects DNA Exhibition Production Committee, which plans and produces exhibitions that have attracted over 200,000 visitors in total by displaying props and other real items throughout the country. The exhibition will be held in collaboration with "Sendai Cinema," an accreditation system that aims to promote films shot on location in the city of Sendai and attract tourists to the city through tours of filming locations. We will implement new and interesting projects that are also compatible with today's digital society.

What's "Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion"?

“Gamera 2: Attack of Legion”

The special effects film "Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion" was released in 1996.
This is the second film in the "Heisei Gamera Trilogy" and takes place in Japan one year after the first film, "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe". It depicts Gamera's battle against "Legion," an unknown group of space creatures.

The many settings that elaborately incorporate the social situation in the early Heisei era, when the Internet began to spread, add breadth and depth to the work, and this film was the first film to win the Japan Science Fiction Grand Prize.

The city of Sendai, where the film was shot, is depicted as a place that "disappears" in the film, but what is noteworthy is its power and reality.
The streets of Sendai in the early days of the Heisei era, which evoke a sense of nostalgia, are elaborately depicted with a mixture of live-action and special effects technology.
